In Tanzania, a new generation of artists is transforming the music scene.  They are creating a story that showcases not just their artistic talent but also the diverse cultural richness defining the musical revival in East Africa. WeTalkSound (WTS) is highlighting 5 artists whose unique voices and creative talents are making a mark. 

Abigail Chams: “Nani?” featuring Marioo

Abigail Chams has been on the journey to musical fame since her early years as a remarkably talented young adult. Coming from a family deeply rooted in music, at the age of 5, she started refining her musical skills, mastering instruments such as piano, violin, and guitar. In her teens, this Tanzanian artist was already gaining attention for her radiant voice and her quest to address social issues. In September 2023, Abigail Chams released her debut EP, ‘5’, serving as a reflection of her diverse musical range. The lead single, “Nani?” an Amapiano-infused track, featuring Marioo, stands out with its infectious beats and melodious vocals.  It’s safe to say that Abigail Chams is destined for stardom.


Micky Singer: “Wanijue”

Micky Singer emerges as a genuine ambassador of African music in an era where global enthusiasm for new and captivating sounds is high. He exemplifies the impressive outcomes achievable when skill, enthusiasm, and commitment seamlessly converge, and his musical creations stand as a testament to his vast range of creativity. Singer is anticipated to maintain a significant presence in the world of African music for a long time due to his infectious melodies and impactful lyrics. Micky Singer’s musical prowess shines in his debut song, “Wanijue” which skillfully blends modern beats and African rhythms.

Kontawa: “Champion”

Abdu Hamid Said, also known as Kontawa, a Tanzanian Bongo Flava artist (a hip hop fusion of Tanzanian sounds) is making waves in both Tanzania and across East Africa. Capturing the vibrant essence of East Africa, this rapidly ascending talent is making a notable impact in the continuously growing Tanzanian music industry. With lively tunes that have stirred up the music scene, Kontawa is making steady strides. As he establishes himself among the emerging male superstars, Kontawa is shaping up to be a significant presence in the music scene. “Champion” is easily one of Kontawa’s best songs as it seamlessly flows with its rap lines and a  catchy chorus. The song is such a major hit that established artist, Harmonize had to feature on the remix.

Seneta Kilaka: “Chawa”

Seneta Kilaka, whose real name is Shaban Ali has emerged as a top Singeli artist, ( a fusion of fast-paced Tanzanian electronic sounds) who has contributed significantly to the genre’s prominence in mainstream music. The artist creates a stellar track titled, “Chawa” which will have you dancing.

D voice: “Kuachana Shingapi (remix)”

Abdul Hamisi Mtambo, known as D Voice, has become a notable figure in Tanzania’s Singeli music genre. His melodious singing and powerful voice have enriched this local music style. WCB Wasafi, the prominent recording label in Tanzania, welcomed D Voice as their new artist. Before joining WCB Wasafi, he left a mark in Singeli with singles like “Kuachana Shingapi” and “Danga Usitume Meseji.” Haitham Kim also featured him in “Ex Mtamu.” With a debut album titled “Swahili Kid” recently released, D Voice is clearly on the path to stardom, showcasing versatility and undeniable musical talent through his tracks.
