Meet the Creative DJ/Producer Duo, Smeez and D3an

From humble beginnings in Instagram DMs to becoming the dynamic DJ duo known as Smeez and D3an, these two masterminds have revolutionised the music scene with their innovative DJ sets and music production. With no predecessors to guide them, their journey is fueled purely by their passion for music. In just two years, they have built a creative empire that defies conventional boundaries.

Specialising in dance music, Afro house, and electronic music, Smeez and D3an have forged a unique sound that resonates with their audience worldwide. Smeez’s apparent influence from Major League’s style of music production from the Western world, alongside his intrigue on music production from YouTube has further enriched their musical palette. For D3an, his influence is deeply rooted from the European dance scene, including artists such as  Avicii, the Swedish House Mafia and Daft Punk. These influences have subtly shaped their music.

Smeez and D3an’s ability to seamlessly infuse the Nigerian music elements with their electronic beats sets them apart and gives them a driven advantage over any other duo that you might know. According to D3an, “We basically just incorporate the Nigerian elements in our music, you hear this mostly from the vocals.”

Connecting with their audience comes naturally to Smeez and D3an. They have an innate ability to understand what their listeners crave, seamlessly blending dance elements into their sets. Their fame skyrocketed when D3an remixed Alpha P’s ‘Paloma’ and Smeez produced L.A.X’s ‘Faster’. This duo’s versatility means there are no fixed roles in their creative process, allowing for a fluid and dynamic collaboration.

Their performances, whether at Obi’s House or expanding into Ghana, are proof of their dedication and spinning creativity. They humorously cite “money, passion, and women” as their inspirations, but their true drive comes from a deep love for music, now celebrated under the genre of ‘amapiano’.

For Smeez and D3an, music production and DJing are two sides of the same coin, requiring equal parts effort, process, and creativity. Their catalogue is extensive, featuring work on Ninola’s album ‘Press Play’, DJ Tunez and their latest project ‘Sabali’ which features Ema Onigah and Dandizzy. Since their inception in 2022, their creative journey has been a meteoric rise, setting the Nigerian dance music scene ablaze.

Looking ahead, Smeez and D3an are optimistic about their future as both music producers and DJs. They are determined to expand their influence, proudly contributing to the Nigerian music scene—whether seen as boastful or not.

The combination of D3an, the PH boy, and Smeez, the Lagos boy, has proven to be a match made in musical heaven. Drawing inspiration from Western artists and their unique backgrounds, Smeez and D3an are a force to be reckoned with in the Nigerian music and creative culture.
