Best Memes Of 2023 And Their Origin

Memes are the lifeblood of the Internet. We live and breathe memes, and I doubt the internet would be what it is, without memes. Someone could be in their homes and make the most trivial post on their social media page, and boom, it becomes a viral meme.

2024 is a few days away and we thought what better moment to collect some of the best memes of 2023 than now? So let’s roll together as we take a look at some of the best memes that rocked our 2023.

1. “You are poor but intelligent” – Layi

Layi Wasabi, the witty social media sensation, has, through skit-making, given us memorable laughter and memes to hold on to. But, of course, one stood out to us. It was when Layi put out an influencer skit to advertise a service.

A character in his skit subject was asked some questions and after he gave an impressive response, Layi responded, “You are poor but intelligent”. This became the soundtrack to many funny clips online, resulting in Layi gaining even more popularity.

2. “You look like Metro” – Rahman Jago

Rahman Jago said 2023 would not end without me gaining a spot on the meme shelve and meant it. It all began when American hip-hop star, Roddy Ricch landed in Nigeria to experience the fun of Detty December. He hung out with a couple of celebrities. The likes of Burna. Olamide, Lil Kesh, and Rahman Jago to name a few.

On one of their night outs, a viral clip of Jago telling one of Roddy’s associates that he looked like an American record producer, Metro Boomin in a hybrid accent caught the attention of many.

In Jago’s words “Bro you look like Metro too much. Did anyone tell you that?”. In a flash, it became a viral audio. Days later, singer, Hotkid did a thing with the viral audio and it’s making waves already. In the last couple of days, Rahman Jago has trended way more than he ever did.

3. “Lonely at the top” – DJ chicken

DJ Chicken is Portable’s bestie, but they are not exactly bestie goals. That’s because Chicken, at some point alleged that he fathered Portable’s first child. The duo do a great job at chaotic entertainment but Chicken owns this spot.

DJ Chicken decided to release his version of Asake’s “Lonely At The Top” and we loved it. As much as it was just a line or two of pure cruise, it slapped so hard it became a viral meme.

4. “Bunch of Women” – woman in court

This woman probably has no idea how famous she is on the internet. This meme stems from a woman who was in court testifying against her husband – a serial cheat.

Giving an account of her experience on one of the days she caught him cheating on their matrimonial bed, she noted that he had been repeating the act for a long, but this time around she caught him with a “Bunch of women”.

It was not just what he said but how she said it. Her body language contributed to the overall success of the meme. For this, we are grateful Ma.

5. You go explain tire – Burna boy

A couple of months ago, Burna Boy went viral for dropping a motivational speech that stuck with not just Nigerians, but many across the globe. According to him, people will only believe your hard work when they see results. Otherwise, you’d have to keep explaining without evidence.

As funny as it may sound, it’s the push the multitude needed to keep putting in the work, to avoid “explaining tirelessly”.

This meme trended and is still very much trending as one of the best memes of 2023, and one of those that will most likely cross over to 2024.
