Artists Weigh In: Is $50K A Lot Of Money For A Music Budget?

You’ve probably seen the convo that’s currently dividing music Twitter: people can’t seem to agree on whether $50,000 is a big budget or not, when it comes to music releases. We’ve done the Lord’s work and asked those directly affected: artists. Here’s what they had to say:

  1. Meji:

Do you think $50K is a lot of money, music-wise?

$50K (N72m+)  is a lot of money for a relatively unknown artist, and a lot can be achieved with it.

What would you do with it?

I’d invest in upgrading my home studio to a standard studio, so that when I want to work with artistes I don’t have a relationship with, I wouldn’t need to have to pay for studio sessions. This could in turn give me passive income.

I’d get a DSLR camera (or an Iphone 17pro max), a lens, light and some other video equipment. I shoot and edit my own videos, so with these, I’d cut down on the cost of producing and marketing the music. I’d also pay for Capcut Premium, Untitled and any other app I need to improve the quality of my work flow.

I’d then spend some of the rest of the money on branding and on marketing the music itself. That’s the most expensive part of this business.

But the first two things listed would go a long way because I’d have acquired assets that can help with my music, possibly bring me passive income and can even aid with getting favours from other people in the same industry.

  1. Faem:

Do you think $50K is a lot of money, music-wise?

Yeah, it’s a lot of money.

What would you do with it?

I’d probably get a new PC for production and a bunch of new equipment, and start a new project.

  1. Jamz FR:

Do you think $50K is a lot of money, music-wise?

I’ll speak from where I’m at. Yes, it’s a lot of money, especially for an independent artiste. It would go a long way in pushing their sound. I think the only reason why anybody is arguing whether it is or isn’t is because of comparison. “Xyz had a $120K budget for their last single”, “Abc spent $75K on just one music video”. It’s true that there are crazy budgets out there, but that doesn’t negate the fact that $50K is still a lot of money.

What would you do with it?

Wonders. I would do wonders with it 😂

Seriously, though, I’d do a lot more in-person studio sessions and create assets for promoting the music. Rather than pumping a lot of cash into one single high-budget visual, I’d create more short-form content to keep promoting the music over time, and then the icing on the cake: marketing. Tbh, I’d also find a way to do a small show for my day ones, they deserve it. In the end, it’s really a matter of finding creative ways to get things done effectively. It’s not just about throwing money at the problem.

  1. KEVIN LNDN:

Do you think $50K is a lot of money, music-wise?

Yes, very small. I’d use it to buy an AMG, shoot content from inside the car, and that’d be the ‘marketing’.

Jokes aside, $50k is a great budget, especially for an upcoming artist, from what I’ve seen and heard. But the reality is, if that music project you are pushing is not aligning with the community, it can only go so far. I’m always a big fan of using what you have to go as far as you possibly can.

What would you do with it?

I’d invest in hiring a professional team first, they would bring the plans together and make my ideas work. Live performances, community events centred around the release, niche influencers, ads, playlisting, radio, etc. Stuff that already works (this budget doesn’t look experimental imo😂).

And some secret ideas I’ll be keeping for myself to use when it’s time 😏✌️.

  1. Timz:

Do you think $50K is a lot of money, music-wise?

As a music budget, I’d say no.

What would you do with it?

Honestly, it would go into every aspect of the music, from funding the recording process to the branding, to visuals, and eventually marketing.

6. Yiizi:

Do you think $50K is a lot of money, music-wise?

No, $50K is not a lot when it comes to music, considering the current state of things, but it can be managed if spent wisely.

What would you do with it?

With $50K, I’d probably build a strong foundation by creating a professional music catalogue, shooting high-quality visuals, and investing in strategic marketing and promotion.

7. Soulaar:

Do you think $50K is a lot of money, music-wise?

It’s definitely a lot of Money Music Wise, I understand that the process of releasing and promoting music is very expensive and most times you have to spend way beyond such figure to make a heavier impact but that doesn’t cancel out the truth that 50k dollars can still do something

Especially on one song that you want to push to the point of recognition.

What would you do with it?

    Content, content, content.

I’d first have an agreement with a videographer on how we can collaborate and shoot different forms of content with different environments, scenarios, and camera angles for a specific song or two. We’d shoot multiple pieces of content that could cover, let’s say, multiple weeks after a release, so I can focus on other parts of the release. Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok Ads would be used to push the content.

I’d do a small pop-up event where I’d bring people who connect with my music and perform some songs. I’d sell a bunch of merch. The cost of making the merch would be low because I’d do the designs myself. So I would even still make some money back.

I would also do Twitch streams with strategic streamers. I might not even need to pay for some, but the key is motion and visibility throughout the promotion process.

There is so much more to say; these are just a few. Even with all these, I’d not have even spent anything close to ridiculous at all.

    8. Bolaryn:

Do you think $50K is a lot of money, music-wise?

Yes, $50K is a lot of money to set yourself up for a very, very good campaign.

What would you do with it?

Firstly, I would pump the money into the piece of work I’m willing to put out at that time. By that, I mean investing in shooting a music video, running TikTok and Instagram ad campaigns. and also using universities as a channel for marketing, alongside many other things.
