Afrobeats has never shied away from the core of its essence as a celebratory genre rooted in the amplification of great times and party-starting motifs. For all of that, the genre has, however, never strayed too far from the reflective, offering a portal for singers to explore their dreams, desires, and the trade-offs that their quest for success requires over mellow instrumentals that still harken listeners to the dance floor one way or the other. Newcomer, VikTurk, is uniquely positioning his music at the intersection of the genre’s party-starting ethos and a reflective desire to speak his wishes into reality over balmy instrumentals.
At the onset of his career, VikTurk is one of a new class of artists working to expand the textural and emotive range of the genre with their message and mellow enunciation. VikTurk’s new song, “Omolomo,” is a euphonious statement-maker that explores and luxuriates in the depth of his bold dreams for future success while remaining mellifluous enough to stir the heart. In many ways, the true victory of “Omolomo” is how it functions as a tool of predestination, laying down the trajectory that the singer intends to go on as he ascends to new levels of success in his chosen craft. With every delicately layered lyric in the song, VikTurk brings us to the core of his ID while carefully constructing his vision of the future.
Speaking of the song, VikTurk describes it as a portent into his dreams and how he approaches life. “This song is a testament to the human spirit’s capacity to rise above adversity and shine brightly in the face of darkness, chase their dreams, and never lose sight of the light within,” he says. “I purposely wanted to speak about these things on my debut song because I hope to create a lasting impact, inspire listeners with a message of hope, and expand my reach as an artist in the coming months and years. ‘Omolomo’ is a good way to start that vision.”
The tranquil mid-tempo number is a true collaborative effort that mirrors the future of Nigerian music as a diverse team of creatives worked to bring it to life. The song’s jaunty percussive production was handled by rising producer, Veeny Beatz (Eugy and Pearl Candy). Highly-regarded singer and songwriter, Ayanfe (“Migrate” and “Laba Laba”) also contributes as a songwriter on “Omolomo,” completing a dream team that helps to set VikTurk’s career on its way.
This is, however, not his first foray into the music industry with him previously releasing music under the moniker, Gold. In 2019, he announced his presence as a musician on the rise with the release of “Magical Love,” a gilt-edged exploration of love’s redemptive powers which was also followed by a freestyle titled “Inside Me.” The freestyle also followed themes of romance and was released in March 2021.
Born and bred in Lagos, Nigeria, VikTurk (real name Victor Adeyeye) is an Afropop singer. Raised by a single mother who introduced him to music, his introduction to music came at the numerous churches he attended as a child. He’s a self-taught piano player who kickstarted his career in 2020.
