Nu Baby is an artiste that wants to break barriers.
Hi, Nu Baby! Can you tell us a bit about yourself? How are you coping with the lockdown?
Nu Baby is fine, gravy, sweet guy, just being a baby boy lol, Nu Baby is a singer, songwriter and performing artist, a graduate from the University of Manitoba. I’m a Liverpool fan, I play football occasionally, I am a big music head, I am currently in Winnipeg Canada. I have just been keeping myself busy, making music daily, I am taking it a day at a time as it is a very unpredictable time.
What was growing up like for you?
I grew up in Ibadan, I did primary school in Ibadan and school in Christ the king catholic college in ijebu ode. Growing up was chilled, my parents were a mix of strict and liberal so it was a weird mix. One of the most interesting things was growing up listening to only Yinka Ayefele and baba Ara.
What kind of music did you listen to, growing up?
The earliest was Baba Ara and Yinka Ayefele but I had the chance to listen to circular music from my neighbor who used to blast music out of his house for sure but then of course as I grew a bit older in high school I fell in love with Styl plus, Wande coal and later on Wizkid.
Did your early music experiences influence you to start creating music?
No, not really until jss1 when i was called a rapper because I could rap to bow wow and Ciara.
When did you start creating music? When did you start pursuing it professionally?
I started creating music in the year 2018 and that’s when I also started taking it seriously due to my friends pressuring me to take it seriously, and they literally would just order a mic and bring it to my house.
Do you play any musical instruments? Can you produce and engineer yourself?
I used to play the saxophone and the piano but it’s been a while and no not really, I do a bit of engineering but mostly I work with Gmastered, we are basically a duo, and every vocal of mine goes through him. I am very involved in the process of creating my music even when it comes to mixing and mastering I am present as I know exactly what I want to sound like and what should go where.
Who & what inspires you to make music now?
I wanted to be wizkid, that’s who inspired me to start in the beginning but of course I’ve grown to be myself and have my own goals and it just feels overtime this is my destiny even when I try to run away from it.
When you create, what’s your process like? What are some things you do to get into the zone to create?
Melodies, I always try and get melodies that might fit the record first, and when I try i naturally just try and match the energy of the record, sometimes I have alcohol but barely that happens.
Do you make music for yourself or does your audience influence your direction?
I make music for myself and I am not influenced by the audience, my first year recording music I only made what I wanted and I have maintained that energy.
Have you ever performed on stage? How did it feel?
Yes I have and it definitely felt good knowing people were aware of my music and seeing my music make people happy and this was at a club in my city over here in Canada.
How is support from your family regarding your music?
In the beginning, it seemed like a distraction because they are not big music people so they were against it but now that I have finished school and they can see how persistent I am they are more receptive.
What has been the most challenging aspect of your career as an emerging artist?
For sure it will be the funds and also staying motivated and keeping my eye on the goal as I could be using my degree for something more profitable also the pressure of if i am doing the right thing .
Will you rather be independent or sign to a record label right now? Why?
I will definitely rather be with a label, a label has more structure and is more accountable for what goes on with the music unlike now that I basically have to handle everything as well as fund the projects.
What have you learnt the most so far in your music and life journey?
Perspective, the way you see it is not always set in stone, you should always be willing to be flexible with your perspective.
Many artists have distinctive visual brands. What would you say is your fashion style? Do you have a stylist?
I like to keep it smart and comfortable and you can see that with the promotional pictures for the 2 track EP “two for you” and yes I do have a stylist and he has known me for a long time so he just knows how to keep it smart and comfortable but then it still catches your eye, at the end of the day I just want people to see me and say “bobo yi o fresh .
How frequently do you release music? What influences your decision on when to drop music?
To be honest, for the past 2-3 years, I was not as consistent with dropping music because I was not in the right spot to but now things are about to change, I just dropped 2 tracks “OBODO GIDI” and “with you”.
Any projects coming soon?
We are also planning to drop an EP in the first half of 2021 titled “ Can you hear me”The idea behind the 2 track EP “ two for you” was just to give people two songs to start of the year as we plan on having a great year musically and the EP “ Can you hear me” would be us officially showing what i am about.
If given the chance, would you: Reinvent the wheel or build a new chariot?
I would definitely build a new chariot as I feel it is forward ever, we want to keep building and not staying in the same place or reinventing the same thing, we want to be radical and break new barriers.
What’s the goal for you? What would a successful career for you look like?
I want to perform at the highest level possible in the African music space, I want to live an impact for eternity and for my generation.
Would you take a 9 to 5 job to supplement your income – do you currently have a job – or do you do music full-time?
At the moment I’m doing music full time, I will rather not get a 9-5 as I feel my creativity won’t be fully channeled to the music, that would be a distraction to the music and at this point, I want to make the best music possible.
