Nigeria’s foremost music award show will hold its 15th edition on the 4th of September. This year, The awards’ organizers have expanded the scope of nomination, increasing the number of Award categories from 26 to 35 categories with 118 nominees in total.
Olamide & Wizkid have the most wins (as a solo artiste) at the Headies Awards with 10 plaques each. Veteran rapper, Modenine follows closely with 9 awards, which includes a record 7 wins in the ‘Lyricist on the Roll’ category. Davido and 2face Idibia have each won 7 awards, closing the top 5 most awarded artistes in the History of The Headies. This year, Wizkid, Davido & Olamide are nominated in 10, 7 & 6 categories respectively – a good chance to cement their spots in the Top 5.

BEST RAP ALBUM
- Olamide could equal MI Abaga’s record of three ‘Rap Album of the year’ awards with his ‘carpe diem’ album nominated this year
- A-Q can become the second rapper to record back to back wins in this category joining Olamide who won consecutively in 2013 & 2014 for YBNL & ‘Baddest Guy Ever Liveth (B.G.E.L).
NEXT RATED
- Ayra Starr could become the first female artistes to win this award since 2009 when Omawunmi won. If she wins, she’ll be only the third female artistes to win, others being Asa & Omawunmi.
- This year’s nominees: Bnxn, Ruger, Ayra Starr, Zinoleesky & Lojay
BEST VOCAL PERFORMANCE (FEMALE)
- Only Omawunmi has ever won this category multiple times. Niniola, Simi & Waje could match her record of two wins in this category, with Niniola on course to record consecutive wina after bagging last year’s award. Waje won her first and only award in 2011, while Simi won hers in 2016.
- This year’s nominees: Ayra Starr, Liya, Niniola, Simi, Tems & Waje.
BEST VOCAL PERFORMANCE (MALE)
- All artistes nominated in this edition have never won in this category hence we’re getting a first time winner between Oxlade, Brymo, Ric Hassani, Johnny Drille & Tay Iwar.
- Praiz holds the record for this category winning three times. He is followed closely by Timi Dakolo with two wins.
- This year’s nominees: Oxlade, Brymo, Johnny Drille, Tay Iwar & Ric Hassani
SONG OF THE YEAR
- If Wizkid wins, he will join Davido and D’banj as record holders in this category with two wins each. Davido’s wins came in 2014 (‘Aye’) & 2018 (‘If’) while D’banj’s came in 2007 (‘Why Me’) & 2012 (‘Oliver Twist’)
LYRICIST ON THE ROLL
- Modenine holds the record for the most wins in this category with 7 wins (winning 6 consecutively). Vector (and Illbliss) comes second with two wins and a chance at a third at this year’s awards. A-Q and Jesse Jagz could also pick up second wins in this category.
- This year’s nominees: A-Q, Blaqbonez, Jesse Jagz, Ladipoe, Payper Corleone & Vector.
BEST MUSIC VIDEO
- All nominees this year have never won this category
- Pink could become the first ever female video director to win this award.
- Jude Okoye & Clarence Peters hold the record for most wins in this category, both winning 5 times including a joint win in 2013 for P Square’s ‘Alingo’.
- This year’s nominees: TG Omori, Pink, Meji Alabi, Director K & Ovie Etseyatsa
ALBUM OF THE YEAR
- Olamide holds the record for the most (3) wins in this category. He could extend that record this year if he bags it this year for alnum, ‘Carpe Diem’.
- Wizkid, Ayra Starr, Brymo, Basketmouth, Femi & Made Kuti have never won this category.
- Ayra Starr could become the third female to win this category joining Simi (2018) and Asa (2006).
RECORDING OF THE YEAR
- Brymo could win a category-record third award, previosuly winning in 2012 & 2020 for ‘Ara’ & ‘Ozymandias’. He could also be the first to win in consecutive years. Timi Dakolo & Darey also have two wins in this category but are not nominated for this year’s awards.
The 15th edition of the Headies will be held at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, Georgia, United States on 4 September 2022. This will be the first edition hosted outside Nigeria.
