Daniel Okobi (aka Kobi Jonz) is no newcomer to music. As a fact, he has been releasing tracks since far back as 2016 and his debut project dropped in 2018. This experience informs Kobi’s approach to his second project titled “KOOL REBEL”.
In this 5-track Ep, he exudes a rare confidence. Worthy of note also,
is his strategic intentionality. From working with Grammy award winners to consciously crafted lyrics, the intent is clear. Kobi wants you to have a blissful listening experience while being introduced into his
world.
In my view, the Texas-based artiste takes on two personas in this project – The Rebel and the Kool Guy
THE REBEL.
On “Tbh”, Kobi lays it all bare in 78 seconds. He talks about intentions, struggles, friendships and his
journey to the top. “Tbh” (Acronym for “To be Honest”) is a glance into his life and more importantly, a
great opener.
” Kritikal” is defiant in its entirety. It begins with a short speech by human rights activist, Femi Falana(SAN).
Kobi channels the late Fela Kuti, as he addressed societal ills accompanied by basslines and horns that consolidate the afrobeat experience reminiscent of tracks by Afropop’s biggest stars.
THE COOL GUY
While the first two tracks projects a rebellious persona, the final three tracks introduces a cool guy who
wants to find love, get intimate and have a great time.
On “Dada”, Grammy award winning producer, Telz creates a perfect environment for Kobi to flex his
afropop chops. The journey continues with the experimental but intimate “Afro Goosebumps”. This track
comes off to me as a filler even though the bold attempt is acknowledged.
The Ep closes with “Trouble Maker” – My clear favourite. It is a dancehall record through and through;
The instrumentation bears some similarity to Major Lazer’s “particula”. If there were any doubt of Kobi
Jonz’s lyrical dexterity, he clears them all on this beautiful track. This one is for the gyal dem.
Conclusions.
“Kool Rebel” is a 7/10 project. The intentionality, confidence and experience involved in its creation
project is so tangible and should be appreciated. However, the track sequencing could have been better
and songs like “Dada” and “Afro Goosebumps”, especially the latter were delivered below expectations.
