5 Of The Most Memorable Moments At The 16th Headies 

For 16 years, the Headies have celebrated Africa’s unity through Afrobeats, by rewarding some of the most outstanding performances and feats. You can call this a reward of excellence.

On September 3, 2023, the 16th Headies Award took place at the Cobb Energy Performing Art Centre in Atlanta, Georgia USA.

The prestigious event had in attendance both new and old cats, which contributed to adding substance to, as well as promoting inclusivity at the already grand event.

In this article, we would like to shine the spotlight on 5 of the most memorable events at the 16th Headies Award ceremony.

Rema’s Speech

Rema is 23, but he is well above his years, and constantly reminds us he has a wealth of wisdom. The Benin born’s speech at the event sent social media, especially Twitter into a frenzy.

According to some, he saved face for the event, after revealing that  Afrobeat is one genre that unites all others. The Mavin records signee, proceeded to share that he represents Benin on a global scale.

Furthermore, he mentioned that he would be holding the fort for a very long time. Many also seem to think this his speech was directed towards his senior colleague, Burna Boy, following his speech during one of his interviews.

Rema concluded his iconic speech by highlighting the reasons Nigerian artists need to support local institutions.

Sound Sultan’s Special Recognition

Sound Sultan was not just a musician. He was a body of talent, who lent his voice to speak against corruption and bad governance on behalf of the masses.

After a hard-fought battle with Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, Sound Sultan, on the 11th of July, gave up the ghost at the age of 44.

The Headies paid him tribute by awarding him a special recognition, which was received on behalf of his family by rapper, MI Abaga.

Asake’s Performance

Asake gave a closing rendition with his hit track, Lonely At The Top, off the album, Work of Art. This singular act revived the night to an extent.

ODUMODUBLVCK’s Feat

Fans of Big Kala and music lovers across the globe are glad that the Abuja-bred singer is finally getting his flowers. Bagging 2 awards in the Rookie of the Year category, after going head-to-head with other nominees like Guchi, Bloody Civilian, Bayyani, and others.

He, as well copped his Best Rap Single Award, courtesy of his jam, Declan Rice.

Asake Winning Album of the Year over Burna Boy 

Asake clinched the Album of the Year award over talents like Davido, Rema, Burna Boy, and Omah Lay.

His emotions could be felt in his speechlessness while on stage to receive his award plaque.

The sensational singer and performer started out as a dancer in high school and transitioned into music. He got his big break in 2022, following the success of his song “Omo Ope” off his debut EP, “Ololade”. He recently sold out the 20,000-capacity O2 Arena.
